McLaren to significantly increase road car production

The bitter rivalry between McLaren and Ferrari which has dominated F1 of recent times looks certain to spill over from the track to the showroom floor. In a typically bold move, McLaren is to ramp up production of its elite sports cars from 100 to 1,000 per year by 2011 and eventually to 4000 annually. The SLR McLaren sells at UKP 300,000 plus, but McLaren supremo Ron Dennis told the Financial Times earlier this week that volume production would enable McLaren to make a ‘far more affordable’ car and compete with its F1 rival Ferrari in the sports car market.


The McLaren Group has been one of ther most successful race car manufacturers in F1 history, and in 1992, the Gordon Murray penned F1 was created as the ultimate sports car. In 1998, the F1 was clocked at 240.1 mph (386.7 km/h) to officially become the world's fastest production road car.
The top speed record was broken in 2005, thirteen years after the car was first built, but to this day the F1 remains the fastest naturally-aspirated production car in the world – 17 years after its introduction.
We await the next, more affordable chapter with great expectation.

Aston Martin gets personal in Beijing

While there were no totally new offerings from Aston Martin at Auto China 2012, the British luxury automaker took the opportunity to showcase its personalization capabilities by unveiling three "Year of the Dragon" special editions. The decked-out DBS Volante, Virage Coupe and V8 Vantage S Coupe on show in Beijing are part of the company's "Dragon 88" edition which will be limited to, you guessed it, 88 customized sports cars.



Aston Martin says that each of the 88 cars will feature "bespoke details that celebrate the mystical qualities of the dragon symbol, synonymous with power, strength and good luck in Chinese folklore." This detailing includes golden dragons embroidered on the headrests and 24-carat gold coated Aston Martin wing badges. The cars also get a special paint job to "chime with traditional Chinese art and imagery."

The customization doesn't extend to performance upgrades, but perhaps to soften this blow, Aston Martin showed the 7.3-litre, carbon fiber-packing One-77 supercar alongside the "Year of the Dragon" offerings.



Aston Martin wasn't alone in its efforts to impress the locals in Beijing (Smart and Jeep also showed dragon-themed cars) and is pushing to rapidly expand its distribution in the region.
“We are investing significantly in the Chinese market throughout 2012 and beyond," says Aston Martin's Global Sales Director Andy Gawthorpe. "Today Aston Martin operates nine dealerships in the region, with 11 additional showrooms planned to open in China this year alone. China is on course to become Aston Martin’s third biggest market.”

During the festivities of this past weekend's Concorso d'Eleganza Ville d'Este in Lake Como, Italy, Aston Martin introduced a new concept called the Project AM310. Unlike the superlative BMW Zagato Coupe, the AM310 is expected to serve as more than a one-off concept - it's reportedly a preview of the replacement for the DBS.

According to media reports, the new Aston Martin concept made its debut on the banks of Lake Como with very little fanfare. Indeed, information about the car on Aston's website is limited to this brief statement: "Entered in the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes, Project AM310 points to an exciting and dynamic future for Aston Martin as we prepare to celebrate our centenary next year in truly luxurious and sporting style."
The concept lost out on the design award to a freshly painted Alfa Romeo 4C, and perhaps that's because judges saw exactly what us car fans see: a concept that looks like it's already a part of Aston's line-up.
To be fair, while the overall shape and look of the AM310 is pure Aston 2012, you'll find some revisions if you investigate a little closer. The rounded haunches and rear fascia, redesigned front-end (particularly down low), and One-77-inspired side vents and tail lamps separate the AM310 from the soon-to-be-replaced DBS.
According to Autocar, the AM310/new DBS will differentiate itself slightly from the current DBS in terms of materials. The new flagship will use more generous amounts of carbon fiber in the chassis and body, borrowing again from the limited edition One-77. It will be powered by a 6.0-liter V-12 engine with an output increase to around 550 hp.
The DBS replacement is expected to get a full reveal within the next few months. We presume Aston will actually release some details the next time around.

Toyota to demonstrate full electric race powertrain on Pikes Peak

Toyota Motorsport is hoping for a spectacular few months in the middle of 2012, most notably with the race debut for the TS030 HYBRID in the Le Mans 24 hour and now for an EV assault on Pikes Peak.



Not content with challenging the all-conquering Audi Team Joest with its hybrid 3400cc V8 and supercapacitor energy storage system, the company has unveiled a new development of its TMG EV P001 car (which set a very respectable EV lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2011) dubbed the P002 with which it will compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado on July 8.

Last year TMG set a new electric lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with the road-legal TMG EV P001 car. The powertain from that car has now been fitted to a chassis from Radical Sportscars to form the basis of the new TMG EV P002 car.


The new P002 will compete at Pikes Peak as part of a project from Japanese company RK1 Inc. Multiple Japanese rally champion Fumio Nutahara will drive the car with Yokohama branding.
The TMG EV P002 has a predicted top speed of 240km/h (150 mph) in Pikes Peak configuration, with combined maximum power of 350 kW from its two axial flux motors.
The hillclimb, which begins at an altitude of 2,800 m (9,190 ft) and reaches the summit of 4,300 m (14,100 ft), is an ideal environment to showcase the strengths of an electric powertrain, specifically that the twin electric motors produce a consistent 900 Nm of torque regardless of altitude, while combustion-engined vehicles drop off in performance with altitude due to air density.
The TMG EV P002 underwent a successful three-day test at the Paul Ricard circuit in southern France in May and even the press statement was clear that "TMG wants to be increasingly involved in electric motorsport and we believe our powertrain technology is an industry-leading combination of performance, durability and packaging."

That's unlikely to be proven at Le Mans, where the bookies have installed Audi as an odds-on favourite.
The final line of the company press release announcing the new P002 sums the whole thing up nicely. "Electric powertrain technology in motorsport is still in its development phase but through projects like this one, TMG is laying the foundations for the future of high-performance and motorsport cars.”

Performance Makeover For McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren has announced a raft of upgrades to its already formidable MP4-12C supercar. A 25 hp increase in power that gives the 12C’s 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 engine a maximum output of 616 hp (625 PS) leads the list of enhancements which will come online later this year.



McLaren says the new engine mapping and resulting horsepower boost doesn't come at the expense of engine efficiency, with fuel economy specced on the EU combined cycle at 24.2 mpg (11.7 l/100km) and CO2 emissions remaining at 279 g/km.

The 7-Speed SSG transmission also gets a work over, promising "crisper throttle response and improved clutch control for gear changes that are both faster and smoother."
In terms of aesthetics, there have been no major changes to exterior styling (look closely and you might notice that the badge has been redesigned) while an additional paint finish - "Volcano Yellow" - has been thrown into the mix, along with a new 5-spoke wheel design.
On the inside, the revised 12C gets more trim options, an upgraded climate control system, heated seats and "One Touch Seat Return" functionality which returns the drivers perch to the position it was in for the previous occupant.
One of the most unusual features of the car - its Intake Sound Generator (ISG) - has also been refined. The system, which controls the level of engine intake noise in the cabin depending on the selected powertrain mode, can now be manually adjusted through an electronic menu.
A button operated door entry system replaces the 12C’s original touch sensor system and an improved automatic headlight system (which now switches on the lights when it begins to rain) is also included. New equalizer settings for the Meridian audio system plus a vehicle lift option - which provides more ground clearance at speeds of up to 37 mph (60 kph) - round off the changes to the 2013 model.
Headed for production later this year, the latest iteration of the lightweight supercar will be priced at US$239,400. McLaren is also offering existing 12C owners an upgrade package at no cost from October 2012.

2013 Chevy Volt adds range, not price


GM announced this week that the 2013 Chevy Volt, which will go on sale in August, will get a boost in electric range and efficiency. The automaker has tinkered with the formula of its lithium-ion battery to provide a few extra miles.

Plug-in vehicle manufacturers must have all kinds of trepidation when it comes time for the official US Environmental Protection Agency rating. The EPA has a way of messing up marketing materials big time. In the case of Fisker, the official EPA rating cut the Fisker Karma's claimed 50 miles (80.5 km) of all-electric range down to 32 (51.5 km). Combined with the low, SUV-like 20 mpg (11.8 L/100km) the EPA stickered in for gas-only mileage, it was quite a blow to the Karma's image.
In GM's case, it wasn't quite as bad, but there was still a bit of fallout. In the months leading up to the Volt's December 2010 launch, GM was ever-eager to point to a study showing that 80 percent of Americans drive 40 miles (64 km) or less every day. That worked out pretty well because GM originally estimated the Volt's all-electric range at that very 40 miles, later revising it to between 25 to 50 miles (40 to 80.5 km). Essentially, assuming a 40-mile range, the Volt could serve as a full-blooded EV for the majority of Americans, almost lending credibility to GM's insistence on referring to the Volt, a series hybrid, as an electric vehicle.
Enter the EPA and a flat 35-mile (56-km) all-electric range rating. That may have been smack in the middle of GM's range, but it sure took the the effectiveness out of the whole "40 miles a day" claim. Five mpgs may not be a huge difference, but it kind of fudges the averages - it would seem there wasn't a study for what percentage of Americans drive 35 miles or less every day.
GM is slowly inching its way toward that 40-mile rating. The automaker announced yesterday that the 2013 Volt will travel 38 all-electric miles (61 km) on a single charge. After the first 38 electric miles, the Volt's range-extending gas engine kicks in to deliver an additional 340 miles (547 km) or so. The new model will also improve its electric fuel economy rating, leaping from 94 mpg-e to 98 mpg-e (2.4 L/100km equivalent).
GM says that it's made changes to the size and composition of the Volt's battery based upon the driving experiences of Volt owners. The battery is now 16.5 kWh instead of 16 kWh. GM has also changed the chemical composition of the battery.
While it doesn't go into specifics on its chemistry, Bill Wallace, GM director of Global Battery Systems Engineering, explains (for a five-year-old audience?): "The best way to explain what we’ve done at the cell level is to compare it to a cake batter recipe. Sometimes if you use more sugar and less vanilla you get a better tasting cake. We’ve done some work at the cell level to modify the ‘ingredients’ to make a better end result."

As you might expect, the slight size boost also means a slight increase in charging time. The new Volt battery will take 10.5 hours to charge when using a 120-volt outlet and 4.25 hours to charge when using the optional 240-volt charger (up from 10 hours and 4 hours, respectively).
In what could be viewed as good or bad news, Chevy told the media in a conference call that the Volt's price will remain the same (US$39,995) when moving from the 2012 to 2013 model year. Automakers often increase the price for a new model year, especially when adding equipment (or range), but some consumers might have been hoping for another price decrease. The 2012 Volt dropped about $1,000 in price from the original 2011 model - no such luck this time around.
The 2013 Volt will go on sale beginning in August.
